My Background in Counseling & Psychotherapy

Hi, I’m Julie Cohen (she/her), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I’m a therapist who believes that meaningful change begins with feeling truly seen and supported. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Child Mental Health Specialist, offering virtual therapy throughout California from my practice in Los Angeles.

I work with people navigating life’s big challenges—whether that’s anxiety, depression, panic attacks, grief and loss, or major life transitions. I also have a special focus on LGBTQ+ mental health, particularly with gay and lesbian clients who are seeking an affirming space to explore identity, relationships, and emotional well-being.

My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and personalized. I draw from a blend of therapy models—like psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (CBT), existential, and strength-based therapy—depending on what fits best for you. Therapy with me is not one-size-fits-all. Together, we’ll figure out what’s working, what’s not, and how to help you move forward with more clarity and confidence.

Before starting my private practice, I spent many years working in community mental health centers across Los Angeles County. I’ve also trained and supervised dozens of therapists working toward licensure, and I bring that depth of experience into the therapy room—especially when supporting people who feel overwhelmed or stuck.

My path as a therapist started in 1990, with a focus on trauma recovery. I served as the Director of Clinical Services at a domestic violence shelter, where I developed one of the first counseling programs in the country for children exposed to domestic violence. That work shaped my lifelong commitment to helping people heal in environments that feel safe, respectful, and empowering.

I earned both my Master’s in Counseling and my Bachelor’s in Child Development from California State University, Northridge, and I’m a member of CAMFT.

If you're looking for therapy that meets you where you are—with honesty, heart, and real tools for growth—I’d be honored to work with you.
